The Dutch word ‘ontbijt’ (= breakfast) originally consists of two parts. The Middle Dutch ‘ont’ means ‘before’. The word ‘bijt’ is derived from ‘bijten’ or ‘eten’. That means that breakfast is seen as ‘beginning to eat’. Pretty much the same, right?
